Each original OOAK painting is hand painted by me, on antique roofing slates that are salvaged from historical buildings, schools, victorian homes, etc..
slate takes many years to form and has existed for around 100 years or more on top of these buildings. *read below for more info on how slate is formed.

Hello, my name is Kimberly Freshour Burgy. I'm a West Virginia artist and enjoy working with acrylics. I've been painting for many, many years and have worked in most any craft you can think of.
A few years ago I decided to paint something on an old piece of slate and I was hooked!
I decided early on that I would paint on only antique slate, because of the history behind it-- I love the look, the feel of it, and how well it lasts w/acrylic paint, not to mention that the slate has been around for 100's of years, and withstood around 100 more years of weather and storms ontop of these old buildings. It just goes to show you how sturdy and strong slate really is when cared for properly.
There is just a feeling to the antique slate! It's like when you walk into an old antique shop, and you just want to touch that old piece that you're drawn too. It brings so many thoughts to your mind, how old, who made this, how long did it take, what is the history.
They say that everything made by hand --there is a bit of the artist's soul and personality in the piece, the love and passion that goes into the making of that special item.

Every slate will come with my signature on the front and also signed on the back with information of where the slate came from. Ex: old school house in Rockport, WV. I'm also now including a certificate of authenticity with each painting.

**Eras to form and many years on the roofs of histoical buildings, slate is a facinating substance and a joy to paint on and own .

Slate; a crystalline rock derived from sediments of clay and fine silt which were deposited on ancient sea bottoms. Superimposed materials gradually consolidated the sedimentary particles deposits of shale.
Mountain building forces subsequently folded, crumpled, and compressed the shale. At the same time, intense heat and pressure changed the original clays into new minerals such as mica, chlorite, and quartz. By such mechanical and chemical processes bedded clays were transformed, or metamorphosed, into slate, whole geologic ages being consumed in the process.

All slates come with hangers. I use solid copper wire, rope/hemp, leather strap etc. to match the theme or design on the slate. But you can request what you prefer.

this is an example the first slate at top was recently custom ordered on a rarer 14x27" slate and the name added at the bottom. The customer wanted a butterfly and dragonfly because her children dressed as these one Halloween when little. How sweet!
It has a double, hand braided rope hanger.

Another example of a popular slate is this bird house w/bee hive.
The photo below shows the basics. For the winter slate I add pine cones and needles or holly leaves w/the berries.
For spring with the same design, I add vines, green foilage and daisies.
The wording on this one is usually, BLESS OUR NEST or BLESS OUR HOME w/the bumble bee trail (dotted lines) for the word BLESS., and OUR NEST trails down the right side.
For indoors or out, the words can be changed ex; BLESS MY KITCHEN, or Just a last name, anything you like.
I have this in my kitchen w/bless our nest (It matches our decor of fruits and green, red, mustard plaid)

These can be given as an everlasting gift. Hung on childs bedroom wall afterwards to remind them of the special occasion. My best friend started this for her grandson, his bedroom decor is frogs and I painted a frog on a lilly pad. Prices start $20 for say an 8x10" and depending on details.

A custom order recently, was that ordered by fellow co-workers for a man, who's long time companion and duck hunting buddy (his black lab) was getting along in years and had not long to go.
They asked me to paint a black lab for him.
I really enjoyed doing this peice, and painted a country scene with the dog (up close) coming out of water with the duck in his mouth. They said he loved it!

I enjoy painting just about anything. When just painting for fun, I tend to do rustic, country, primitive, florals, scenery, landscapes and old rustic cabins and woods.
But I also love doing custom orders. From Retro to modern art/Country rustic to beach/sea scapes and any sports related plaques. I love the challenge!

I've done just about every craft from sculpting, knitting/crochet, sewing, painting to even
paper making, just to name a few!
My handmade /Painted hangtags are a popular item.
I paint them with just about anything, deers, santa's, raggedy, dolls, gingerbread men, amish kids, custom orders etc..or plain aged.

I've been crafting since about age 5 when I made my own Barbie clothes from old material my Mom and neighbors would give me. Then around age 6 an elderly neighbor taught me to crochet and I was "hooked"

I"m also into bead making, and working with polymer clay.
My beads are popular for jewelry artists.
Occasionally when I make a bead set, I just get that urge to make something out of it. So on the left you'll find the links to my beads page and a jewelry page.
